Dr. Matthew Bunson Joins EWTN News as Senior Contributor
Irondale, AL (EWTN) – EWTN Global Catholic Network is pleased to announce that Dr. Matthew E. Bunson will join the staff of EWTN News as a Senior Contributor effective July 1.
“For some time now, EWTN has collaborated with Matthew Bunson on a number of programming projects,” said EWTN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael P. Warsaw. “Because of his impressive credentials as an author, theologian, and historian, Matthew has been a regular guest and host on a number of EWTN television and radio programs. I am excited that he will now be bringing his talents to EWTN on full-time basis.”
In his new role, Bunson will serve as a Senior Contributor for EWTN News and will creating content for the “National Catholic Register,” the ‘Register Radio’ program, and will be developing television, radio, and book projects in addition to his continuing appearances on EWTN’s many platforms.
For the past 20 years, Bunson has been active in the area of Catholic social communications and education, including writing, editing, and teaching on a variety of topics related to Church history, the papacy, the saints and Catholic culture. He is faculty chair at Catholic Distance University, a senior fellow of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, and the author or co-author of over 50 books including: “The Encyclopedia of Catholic History,” “The Pope Encyclopedia,” “We Have a Pope! Benedict XVI,” “The Saints Encyclopedia” and best-selling biographies of St. Damien of Molokai and St. Kateri Tekakwitha.
Long associated with the Catholic publisher “Our Sunday Visitor,” Bunson served as senior correspondent for the OSV Newsweekly, general editor of “The Catholic Almanac” from 1997 and editor of “The Catholic Answer Magazine” from 2010.
His book on Pope Francis (2013) was the first English-language biography of the new pontiff and won Biography of the Year from the Catholic Book Publishers Association. In addition, his “Encyclopedia of American Catholic History” (2014) won reference book of the year from the Catholic Press Association.
During the 2005 and 2013 conclaves, Dr. Bunson served as a consultant or guest for numerous media outlets and has been heard and seen on many television and radio outlets, including France 24, MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN. He holds a bachelor's degree in history, two master's degrees in theology with specializations in pastoral theology and Church history, and doctorates in ministry and Church history. He is also a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and belongs to numerous Catholic professional and academic associations.
“It is a joy and a genuine privilege to become officially a member of the EWTN family,” Bunson said. “Growing up in Hawaii during a tumultuous era for the Catholics everywhere, I discovered Mother Angelica and EWTN in the years after its founding in 1981, and it became one of my pillars in learning and also living the Faith.
“The legacy of Mother continues today as EWTN serves in this new century as a leader in the New Evangelization, a herald of the Culture of Life and a model for Catholics in proclaiming the Truth in today’s multimedia world. To have the opportunity to contribute even in a small way to this remarkable apostolate’s labors is a dream come true. I am excited at the many projects and adventures that lie ahead.”
