Accountant

TITLE:                 Accountant

REPORTS TO:    Financial Manager

DEPARTMENT:   Accounting

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of standard, technical, accounting functions including analysis, preparation, and maintenance of routine and non-routine entries to the general ledger of EWTN. The Accountant assists in the preparation of interim financial statements, undertakes special projects and/or reports as directed by management, and works closely with management in preparation of annual audits by the independent auditors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews source documents used for accounting, maintenance of ledgers, registers and other records of initial entry, and preparation of periodic and special financial reports, budgets, and maintains fiscal records applying professional accounting principles and methods.
  • Assists in the preparation of daily EWTN cash counts and bank deposits.
  • Reconcile multiple bank accounts.
  • Prepare special account analyses and financial reports as directed by management.
  • Prepare and enter general journal entries and adjustments, with detailed backup; analyze variance reports; and assist in the preparation and maintenance of financial budgets.
  • Responsible for inter-organization transaction with related parties, including billings and reconciliation of inter-organization accounts.
  • Participate in the monthly financial closing process as directed by management.
  • Assist in maintaining the integrity and accuracy of all general ledger accounts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 years of prior accounting experience.

Associate Producer/Call Screener

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Associate Producer/Call Screener, as the first point of contact for listeners during live call-in programs, utilizes excellent knowledge of the Catholic Faith and customer service skills to prep callers for on-air broadcast.  Also executes assigned duties of recording, editing, mixing and transferring audio to and from specific media.  This position is also responsible for exceptional production and promotion of live and recorded programs to EWTN standards.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages all aspects of on-air phone system from screening calls to analyzing logging data to coordinating database of callers for future shows.
  • Serves as point person for all technical issues involving the on-air phone system.
  • Produces and edits recorded EWTN content as well as recorded program partner content to EWTN final broadcast specifications.
  • Assists in the production of live programs and events.

Closed Captioning Technician

TITLE:               Closed Captioning Technician

REPORTS TO:    Closed Captioning Supervisor

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Closed Captioning Technician is responsible for accurately processing the transcript text of a television program into synchronized captions, to be embedded into the program, to allow a viewer to read the dialogue and descriptive sounds. Utilizes special closed captioning equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Upon receipt of a proofed transcript and a post-production program video, the Closed Captioning Technician uses captioning system software to format the text and accurately place captions to match the timing of speech, music and sound effects.
  • Ensure proper screen placement, to avoid covering on-screen graphics.
  • Processes the captions to embed the text on to the disk of the program that will air on television, and routes it to the tape library.
  • As needed, exports to various formats for airing on DVD and video streaming.
  • Maintains organized records of the programs in text and other formats.
  • Reviews broadcast dates to ensure programs are captioned on schedule, allowing other departments time to complete their work before airtime and DVD distribution. 
  • Notifies supervisor of any concerns with tape / graphics / episodes / transcript.
  • Receive live show captions, edit as needed; export to various formats.
  • As needed, proof transcript.

WHAT SKILLS/TALENTS WILL THE IDEAL CANDIDATE POSSESS?

  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a comparable work environment.

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Viewer Services Manager, this position responds to customer inquiries and performs a variety of duties related to Customer Service in accordance with Network policies and procedures. Develops and maintains rapport with customers (via phone, letter, or e-mail) and works to give them the best possible service in both a timely and courteous manner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives, researches, and answers customer inquiries and requests (written or telephone) regarding order status, changes, adjustments, and cancellations.
  • Works with customers to offer alternatives to resolve problems.
  • Receives, researches and answers phone centers requests and inquiries. 
  • Inputs credit cards and researches all declined credit card customers to verify card number, expiration date, etc.
  • Accesses computer system to retrieve customer information, status of orders, make changes on the customer’s order and input credit card and check customer names into the donor file.  Ensures that correct information is used for retrieving and inputting of data.
  • Receives and answers inquiries from other departments regarding Customer Service responsibilities. 
  • Follows up on customer inquiries and research to assure satisfactory completion of order.
  • Completes entry of Internet orders on a daily basis.
  • Enters Spanish web orders manually.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Editor-in-Chief works with the Executive Director to establish editorial content and related strategy and manages the editorial team to accomplish strategic goals.  Handles the overall editing responsibilities for all content for Catholic News Agency. Provides quality control on articles and documents appearing on the specified medium, ensuring they are theologically correct. Supervises the content that CNA delivers via social media, be it proprietary or from other EWTN partners?.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Formulates annual editorial calendar in conjunction with Executive Director. Ensures reasonably consistent editorial content with editorial calendar. Facilitates all possible integration with EWTN’s production calendar.
  • Reviews and manages editorial guidelines, policies, and related compliance.
  • Revises content as necessary in order to enhance its quality and approves pieces based on preset guidelines. Confers with others as necessary to provide expertise, content, and advice regarding bioethics, politics, Church History, Church events, moral theology, general legal, and canon law.
  • Ensures constant diversity (within bounds of magisterium faithful thought and charity) of perspective regarding coverage of news and approach to coverage (what to cover when, how, and from what angle).
  • Ensures proper and consistent catechetical consistency of news and other content.
  • Works with Executive Director to integrate EWTN News strategy and content with EWTN Inc., especially those related with the delivery of news.
  • Works with editors, writers, contractors, graphic artists and other personnel necessary to assemble and ensure on-time content.
  • Checks stories for legal, ethical and theological concerns and consults with Executive Director on questionable items.
  • Assists Executive Director and Director of Operations with editorial budget planning and manages the editorial budget.
  • Delegates responsibilities and sees that tasks are completed.
  • Periodically evaluates all editors and writers; advises on improvement as needed.
  • Does chief reads on all copy; compiles stories as needed.
  • May represent CNA/EWTN at meetings and functions as requested.
  • Maintains regular contact with Catholic Bishops, intellectuals and leaders of key Catholic organizations in order to guarantee a fluid relationship.
  • Works with Executive Director to hire, motivate and manage the team.  Provides regular feedback, constructive comments and training for staff.

  • Select stories from diocesan newspapers that can be paid and republished in our service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience in Journalism or consistent writing.
  • Extensive knowledge of and faithful practice of Roman Catholic faith.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing routine building maintenance tasks to include brick & cement masonry, painting, carpentry, constructing and repairing structural woodwork/ equipment, in and around the Network buildings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works as part of a maintenance team to perform general maintenance duties including but not limited to repairing roofs, flooring, painting and other miscellaneous tasks.
  • Builds, dismantles, repairs, paints or refinishes structures to include counters, cabinetry, benches, partitions, shelves, furniture; installs floors, ceiling tiles, window glass, doors, framework, trim,  cement walk ways, fences, and walls using a variety of material, including cement, stone, wood and bricks.
  • Sets up and operates wood working and/or cement work tools to cut, form and finish material for a job.
  • Follows safety rules and instructions in compliance with Network and OSHA safety regulations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 to 5 years’ experience (including some formal training) in a building trade such as masonry(brick & cement), carpentry, painting.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Mission Advancement Officer is responsible for working with the Vice President of Mission Advancement to solicit donations to support EWTN’s mission and cultivate relationships with EWTN community of donors. Adheres to mutually agreed upon activity metrics and goals.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cultivates and solicits assigned major gift prospects; ensures that donors receive proper acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship.
  • Maintains awareness of the critical needs of the Network and communicates these needs to donors, soliciting gifts for these needs as appropriate
  • Maintains awareness of the impact of the Network and communicates this impact to donor as a means of cultivating affinity with the work of the Network
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of donor conversations, visits and research.
  • Works with selected staff, Board, and Volunteers to ensure coordinated and effective solicitation of EWTN’s major gift prospects; prepares written donor proposals for major gift solicitations; maintains correspondence with donors and appropriate financial personnel.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The News Editor oversees primarily ecclesial coverage for Catholic News Agency, covering issues of concern to a Catholic audience in the United States and the English speaking world.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates coverage of ecclesial events, including U.S. bishops’ conference meetings and World Youth Day gatherings.
  • Holds daily editorial consultations, assigns and discusses stories with writers, edits and posts copy on the website.
  • Tracks news throughout the work day.
  • Collaborates with other EWTN News entities in Washington, D.C. on coverage.
  • Coordinates with Europe editor on coverage.

  • In conjunction with political editor, plans and facilitates twice annual feedback meetings for D.C. writers.
  • Reports to managing editor regarding content of site, ensures that tone, vision and angle of coverage are maintained.

WHAT SKILLS/TALENTS WILL THE IDEAL CANDIDATE POSSESS?

  • Strong writing and editing skills and journalistic knowledge.

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Executive Editor & Editor in Chief, the Operations Manager assists in the development, implementation and ongoing assessment of the National Catholic Register (NCR)’s operations strategy for all of its platforms: newspaper, website, radio program and other digital assets. Coordinates the budget preparation process and ongoing management. Reviews and provides recommendations on team workflow, technology needs and process improvement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizes and coordinates operations to ensure the Register team’s efficiency, productivity, and effectiveness.
  • Assists Executive Director & Editor in Chief in establishing and implementing strategic goals for Register platforms.
  • Works with managers/editors to assess and improve operational management, systems and processes; identify and address problems and opportunities; propose and implement solutions, best practices and training.
  • Prepares annual budgets, reviews financial reports, and coordinates with team to meet budget expectations.
  • Manages relationships with vendors and contractors, including researching, negotiating and implementing rates/pricing, terms and contracts.
  • Assists managers and editors in workflow management for various platforms.
  • Evaluates and coordinates team’s use of adequate and suitable technology and other practical resources to complete activities.
  • Coordinates with EWTN and providers on technical maintenance, development, hosting and server for NCRegister.com.
  • Oversees coordination of staff travel, annual meetings, conferences and EWTN Family Celebration.
  • Manages special projects as assigned by the Executive Director & Editor In Chief, i.e. brand redesign, archiving etc.
  • Ensures EWTN/Register policies and procedures are implemented and followed.
  • Maintains regular communication and relationships across EWTN Departments on behalf of the Register.
  • Collaborates with managers and Human Resources on personnel needs, transitions and onboarding new team members.

WHAT SKILLS/TALENTS WILL THE IDEAL CANDIDATE POSSESS?

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in operations, business management, project management or relevant role, preferably in mass media related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of and faithful practice of the Roman Catholic faith.

Production Assistant

TITLE:                Production Assistant

REPORTS TO:   Crew Chief

DEPARTMENT:  Production

LOCATION:        Irondale, AL

GENERAL SUMMARY: The EWTN Production Assistant is responsible for the technical setup and operation of all audio related production functions in the studio or in the field, including interviews, music, voice-overs, telephone interfaces, roll-ins, and any other audio effects that may be required. Works in other production crew positions as assigned, including Technical Director, Floor Director, Camera Operator, Tape Operator, Video Operator, Teleprompter Operator, Grip, lighting assistant, etc.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates with the Director, Producer and Management on audio requirements and setup required for both studio and remote productions.
  • Sets up and positions microphones for talent, music and/or ambient sound as the production requires.
  • Responsible for proper selection and operation of all audio related equipment.
  • Maintains proper source levels (microphones, clip players, decks, telephone interface, CD, etc.) and relational perspective as production requires.
  • Files equipment trouble reports as necessary.
  • Assists in setting up and taking down sets and production equipment in the studio and in the field.
  • Assists editors by organizing, capturing and ingesting media.
  • Assists producers by logging and labeling media, monitoring productions, completing necessary reports, etc.
  • Maintains network public relations with all guests and visitors in studio and on location.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area. 
  • Regular and prompt attendance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 2 - 3 years’ experience in TV broadcast/cable production or related field and experience in live audio production.
  • Proficient at Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and other computer programs as required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to take direction and follow instructions.
  • Excellent organizational skills as well as verbal & written communication skills.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The EWTN Safety & Security Officer provides campus presence and surveillance to ensure the safety and security of all employees, guests and visitors.  Patrols network grounds on a continuous basis and offers assistance and information to the general public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs campus surveillance by vehicle or walking to ensure security and watches for situations that could result in injury or loss due to potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Screens all vehicles at the Network entrances and monitors activity at or near assigned post.  Maintains a sense of vigilance for undesirable, dangerous, or counterproductive activities or individuals.
  • Monitors camera activity, fire protection systems and other devices from a control room and dispatches calls as necessary.
  • Relays critical information to other security personnel as necessary.
  • Provides accurate and timely written or verbal information/instruction to all vendors, visitors, pilgrims, or anyone conducting business with the Network.
  • Reviews and has personal knowledge of the Safety and Security daily postings and instructions.
  • Initiates emergency 911 calls as appropriate and directs emergency vehicles to proper location on site.
  • Administers First Aid, CPR, basic emergency assistance to employees and guests as needed.
  • Completes incident and accident report forms as necessary.
  • Transports guests to and from the Birmingham airport.
  • Communicates with and assists other Network departments whenever special instructions for guests or visitors are required.
  • Directs traffic for special functions and some live show events.
  • Participates in department training and drills as necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Security/Law enforcement, military, EMS or related field.
  • Possess valid Alabama State Driver’s License.
  • Possess valid State of Alabama pistol permit or be able to obtain upon hire.
  • Ability to qualify with a firearm.
  • Possess up to date First Aid and CPR certification or be willing to obtain within 90 days of hire date.
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA & NFPA codes and standards.

Spanish Radio Producer

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Spanish Radio Producer is responsible for the overall management of an individual radio program, series or project and develops the program ideas consistent with the theme established by the Director, Spanish Radio Production & Programming.  The Producer ensures the project is technically sound, creatively strong, and in keeping with the mission of the Network.  It is the responsibility of the Radio Producer to ensure that each program, series or project is completed on schedule, and if applicable, within budget.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Produces all aspects of the Spanish radio program ensuring all content meets EWTN broadcast standards.
  • Develops program ideas consistent with the mission of the show.
  • Works in collaboration with hosts, facilitators, content contributors, partners, and call-screener to consistently produce “great” Catholic radio in the tradition of Mother Angelica; Christ-centered, engaging and entertaining.
  • Manages all in-show production, ensures recorded messaging and promotional announcements are fresh, timely and on target.
  • Takes the lead by mapping future radio shows, prepares and writes materials as needed. 
  • Ensures social media push & other forms of show promotion/engagement are on point and the show web page is up to date.
  • Keeps abreast of current affairs; religious, secular and pop culture.
  • Able to facilitate shows, voice and produce short form messages as necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains a working list of fill-in hosts and guests, vetted and available for situations requiring tight deadlines.

WHAT SKILLS/TALENTS WILL THE IDEAL CANDIDATE POSSESS?

  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience producing major Spanish market radio broadcasts or related experience.
  • Complete command of the Spanish language (speaking and writing).

  • Ensure database has all pertinent information for scheduling and Viewer Response, if applicable, and maintain database.
  • Coordinates scheduling information with Web Services.
  • Address and solve problems, which result from miscommunication, error damage, or loss.
  • Coordinate closely with Programming Department to ensure the completion of any last minute changes, as well as assuring those changes are properly handled.
  • Print reports and handle inquiries about specific episodes or programs.

  • Responds to questions relative to Friary, Marketing, Production, Programming, Radio, Theology and other areas of the Network as appropriate.
  • Takes prayer requests and handles appropriately and respectfully.
