Departure from Benin (17 February 1982)

Author: Pope John Paul II

On Wednesday, 17 February 1982, the Holy Father departed from Benin with the following words in Cotonou.

I thank once again Mr. President and all the civil authorities for their kind and carefully organized welcome. I thank all those who had a part in the preparation and the unfolding of this great gathering around the Pope, and again all those, in the country, who participated in it through prayer or the offering of their trials. I especially thank my Brother Bishops.

Dear Beninese, you are renowned in Africa for your warm hospitality. I have just been the emotional beneficiary! THANKS! THANKS!

I wish this noble country of Benin the economic, social, cultural, moral and spiritual progress that all its inhabitants wish to prepare together, in an atmosphere of trust and peace! I wish Christians the joy of faith and zeal for the Gospel: God is with you.

For my part, I thank God for all that I saw and heard among you, even if I was only able to go to the edge of your country. You will have a big place in my prayer. Pray also for me, so that God favors my ministry of truth, communion and peace.

I am happy to leave at the head of your diocesan communities Pastors who have my full confidence. But you will allow me to leave with your Elder, Cardinal Gantin! We need him in Rome!

God bless Benin!
