Apostolic Penitentiary

At the request of Bishop Robert J. Baker, Bishop of Birmingham in Alabama, His Eminence Francis Cardinal Stafford, the Major Penitentiary, grants to the faithful on behalf of the Holy Father a Plenary Indulgence for making a Pilgrimage during the Pauline Year to the 2 churches in the diocese of Birmingham dedicated to St. Paul the Apostle, and satisfying the conditions enumerated in the below summaries of the decrees.

PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR PILGRIMAGE
TO THE CATHEDRAL OF ST PAUL, BIRMINGHAM

A Plenary Indulgence may be received for those making pilgrimages to the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham anytime between First Vespers of the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul this year (Saturday Evening, June 28, 2008) and the end of the Solemnity of next year (Sunday Evening, June 29, 2009).

While keeping in mind the memory of the Prince of the Apostles, Saint Peter, one must fulfill all of the following conditions to receive this Plenary Indulgence:

A. The usual conditions for receiving a Plenary Indulgence

1. Complete detachment from any inclination to sin, even venial sin

2 .Making a sacramental Confession 3. Receiving Holy Communion

4. Saying a prayer for the intentions of the Holy FatherB. The conditions for this particular indulgence

1. Making the pilgrimage to the Cathedral of St. Paul

2. Performing one of the following works

a. Participating in a sacred rite or pious exercise (Mass, Liturgy of the Hours, etc.) in honor of St. Paul

or

b. Pausing for a suitable period of time before an image of St. Paul exposed for public veneration, and, at the end of this time of contemplation, reciting or singing an Our Father, the Apostles Creed, and saying invocations to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Paul.

A Plenary Indulgence may be received for those making pilgrimages to St. Paul's Catholic Church in Athens anytime between First Vespers of the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul this year (Saturday Evening, June 28, 2008) and the end of the Solemnity of next year (Sunday Evening, June 29, 2009).
