The Holy Father Visits the U.S.

INSIDE EWTN'S PAPAL COVERAGE
By Michelle Laque Johnson
EWTN Director of Communications

Pope Benedict XVI’s U.S. trip continues on Friday, but now the focus shifts from Washington, D.C. to New York City (please see the schedule below).

However, the inside scoop is that, on this leg of the trip, Raymond Arroyo and Father Richard John Neuhaus will be joined by a number of prestigious guest commentators. They include Vatican Ambassador MaryAnn Glendon; editor, author and former White House speechwriter Peggy Noonan; Catholic League President Bill Donahue; along with featured commentator Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Author and television host Father Benedict Groeschel and EWTN Rome Bureau Chief Joan Lewis will also drop in. If you enjoy Joan’s radio show, “Vatican Insider” (9:30 a.m. Saturdays or 4:30 p.m. Sundays), or if you listen to her each week talking with Teresa Tomeo on “Catholic Connection,” or if you read her blog on www.ewtn.com, then you don’t want to miss this opportunity to see her live.

Among the papal events listed below, you also won’t want to miss the Pope’s historic speech to the United Nations. While it will be closely watched by all the pundits, EWTN will analyze it for you as Catholics.

You might want to consider gathering your pre-teens and teens together to watch the event for youth at St. Joseph’s Seminary (Dunwoodie) in Yonkers, N.Y. This is a precursor to World Youth Day in Australia, which EWTN will also cover later this year.

The Mass – and the music -- at St. Patrick’s Cathedral are going to be magnificent and, of course, the prayers service at Ground Zero is expected to be especially moving.

In between all these events is the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, which has been attended by President Bush for the past three years. He is expected to attend this event as well.

If you can’t watch these events live (and you miss the encores), or if you just want to relive an event, EWTN Online has you covered. Click onto the media section of our papal pages for audio and video archives of all the papal events. EWTN Religious Catalogue is also making available a high quality video of all three Masses that the Pope will celebrate this visit as well as the youth event and the U.N. speech. (www.ewtnreligiouscatalogue.com )

Immediately after the Pope’s departure on Sunday, tune into EWTN for a brand new documentary: “Papacy of Reason,” which is another way for Catholics to continue the celebration of the papacy that we began this week!

And speaking of celebrations, Mother Angelica will celebrate her 85th birthday on Sunday, April 20. All day Sunday, EWTN will intersperse its papal coverage with short clips honoring our foundress. We know you join us in wishing Mother Angelica a very happy birthday!
