Shadowplay:
the Hidden Beliefs and Coded Politics of William Shakespeare
Clare Asquith

Author Clare Asquith observes “English identity is only now beginning to look at the hidden, buried trauma of Catholic persecution under Henry VIII and Elizabeth, and the process has important implications for the England of today.” A fascinating book about, as the title suggests, the hidden beliefs and coded politics of the most famous plays in the English language. ,

Papal Visit Us DVDs

DEAR EWTN FAMILY
By Michelle Laque Johnson
EWTN Director of Communications

What a week we had, watching Pope Benedict XVI’s first visit to the United States! We know you enjoyed our coverage because more than 10,000 of you emailed EWTN to tell us so! Thank you!

EWTN News Director Raymond Arroyo summed up the week for viewers in his blog, which you can still read on www.ewtn.com. His summary was really a challenge to the faithful.

“Journalists are now calling inquiring about whether the Pope's trip was successful and what impact it has had,” he said. “I stand by two sentences I wrote weeks ago. The measure of this trip’s success will not be found so much in what the Pope does, as in the echo that remains after he does it. The response of those who hear him will tell the tale.’ This papal visit will play out in big and small ways, in the hearts and minds of those who have heard Benedict's call.”

Raymond’s insights are really worth reading. For example, in an earlier blog, he noted that the Pope had been called to task by many for his controversial speech at Regensburg. Followers of the Pope will remember that he quoted a Byzantine Emperor’s belief that Islam was “evil and inhumane.” But Raymond notes that the Pope was vindicated.

“As a direct result of the Regensburg speech, 138 Muslim scholars wrote to the Pope requesting a dialogue with Christians,” Raymond said. “Now a permanent Catholic/Muslim forum has been established which will hold its first formal meeting at the Vatican this coming November. Saudi King Abdullah, the custodian of the Muslim shrines in Mecca and Medina, has joined Benedict’s call for an interfaith dialogue and is supporting his efforts. There are suddenly negotiations underway to erect a Catholic church in Saudi Arabia and one has already sprung up in Qatar. This is astounding progress.”

With this kind of record, it will be interesting in the coming year to measure the impact of the papal trip to the United States, a country that surely needed a visit from the Vicar of Christ.

DVDs. Many of you have been asking about the availability of DVDs of the Pope’s visit. To order, please go to our home page, click on Religious Catalogue, and type in “Pope Benedict US” in the search engine at the top of the page. All the papal items EWTN is making available will then pop up.
