Series Name: EWTN Live
Host: Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J. with Fr. Thomas Michelet, OP from La Sainte Baume Priory - France and Richard C. Borgman, Director of the JPII Training Center for the New Evangelization
Date Produced: 10/27/2009
Description: America needs St. Mary Magdalene. On this special EWTN Live, we have the relics of St. Mary Madgdalene from La Sainte Baume Priory. Please click here for a brief commentary on these special relics.

A relic, from the Latin “reliquiae” (of the remains), is something associated with a martyr or someone who died after a holy life. In the early Church it was the common practice to gather up the remains of the martyrs and to bury them with special honor. In the catacombs, the Mass would be celebrated in proximity to those who had imitated Christ perfectly by following Him in death.

There are two motives for the honor given to relics in the Church. The first is the recognition of the holiness of the saints, whether attained through red martyrdom at the hands of the enemies of Christ, or by the white martyrdom of heroic virtue. By venerating relics, we venerate the person whose remains they are, recognizing that these remains shared in the transformation worked by grace, and that nourished in life by the Holy Eucharist, they will also one day share in glory at the resurrection of the dead.

The second follows from this. God has shown that He blesses the honor given to His servants. Elijah's mantle was used by Elisha to perform miracles (e.g. 2 Kings 2:8), and Paul's handkerchiefs and aprons were taken to the sick in order to heal them (Acts 19:11–12). The history of the veneration of relics shows that in honoring the saints we honor God, who often uses relics as instruments of His divine power, to heal and to otherwise assist us in our spiritual and material needs.

Some relic trivia:
  1. 1st Class relics are the actual remains (whether flesh or bones).
  2. 2nd Class relics are things they personally used in life (clothing, prayer books etc.)
  3. 3rd class relics have been touched to the remains (i.e. to 1st Class relics).
  4. to be officially a relic, as required for public veneration, the Church certifies its origin in an official document
  5. relics may never be sold, strictly speaking, but the fair value of the container may be recovered in transferring them to another person
