ISRAEL TO CEDE CONTROL OVER SITE OF LAST SUPPER?

Oct. 20 (CWNews.com) - The Israeli government may cede control of the Cenacle-- the site of the Last Supper-- to the Catholic Church, the Italian daily Il Messagero reports.

Il Messagero says that Israeli President Moshe Katsav could sign an agreement giving the Catholic Church control of the site when he meets with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on November 17. In exchange, the newspaper reports, the Church will give the ancient synagogue in Toledo, Spain, to the Jewish community there.

The Vatican has not commented on the Messagero story.

The Holy See have been negotiating with Israeli on the control of several properties in Jerusalem, of which the Cenacle is the most important. The "upper room" where Jesus and his apostles celebrated the Last Supper is located above a synagogue which is revered by Jews as King David's Tomb.

According to Il Messagero, the tentative agreement struck by Vatican and Israeli negotiators will give the Church control of the upper room, while the lower part of the building remains under Jewish control.
