HISTORIC MASS AT WINCHESTER CATHEDRALLONDON, JULY 20 (ZENIT.org).- A Cardinal had not celebrated Mass
in Winchester Cathedral since the time of Henry Beaufort
(1404-1447). So July 15, 2000 will be remembered as the day when
Cardinal Silvano Piovanelli, Archbishop of Florence, presided
over a Mass in this historic Anglican Church. The event took
place to celebrate the cooperative agreement between the
Cardinal's diocese and the Anglican diocese of Winchester. The initiative has resulted in marked improvement in relations
between Catholics and Anglicans. "Initially I was sceptical, but
I must acknowledge that the first fruits are being reaped,"
stated Peter Doyle, Winchester's Anglican minister.
