POPE CONDEMNS SPANISH TERROR BOMBINGVatican, Mar. 11 (CWNews.com) - Pope John Paul II has firmly condemned the terror bombings that struck Spain on the morning of March 11, and promised his prayers for the victims. In a message to Cardinal Antonio Maria Ruoco Varela of Madrid, the Pope said that the "abominable terrorist attacks" merited "firm and absolute condemnation." He called upon the people of Spain "to continue with determination and without discouragement on the path of peaceful and serene coexistence." That plea seemed to indicate the Pontiff's hope that the bombing would not discourage participation in national elections scheduled fro March 14. According to Spanish security officials, at least 130 people were killed, and
400 wounded, when bombs exploded at three commuter train stations. The Spanish
government believes that the terrorist attack was the work of the Basque
separatist group, ETA, in an attempt to disrupt democratic elections. The
bombing was the bloodiest terrorist attack in Spain's recent history. Click here to share this news story with a friend. |
