INDIAN OPPOSITION DEMANDS PROBE OF ATTACKS ON CHRISTIANS

demanded a national investigation into the rising tide of violence against Christians, after the brutal murder of a Protestant preacher in the Punjab state.

Ashish Prabash, a representative of Campus Crusade for Christ, was found beaten and stabbed at his home in Punjab on June 12. The workers who discovered his body also found a can of kerosene in the home, raising suspicions that the killers had planned to burn down the house and eliminate some evidence of the crime.

Congress Party spokesman V. Hanumantha Rao pointed to the rash of bombings in Christian churches, and attacks on Christian missionaries, as evidence of a concerted effort to intimidate the country's small Christian minority. He said that in the absence of a serious investigation by the Indian government coalition-- which has ties to Hindu nationalist groups-- the Congress Party will conduct its own investigation of the assaults.
