PRAY THE ROSARY FOR PEACE, POPE EXHORTS FAITHFUL

VATICAN, Sep 30, 02 (CWNews.com) -- Pope John Paul II encouraged the faithful to pray the Rosary, especially during the month of October, for the cause of peace.

The Rosary is a prayer particularly suited to today's needs, the Pope said, at a time when "the international situation is heavy with tensions, including some explosive ones." The Holy Father said that he is now preparing a new document on the Rosary, intended to help Catholics "rediscover the beauty and depth of this prayer."

The Pope made these remarks during his Sunday Angelus audience at his summer residence in Castegandolfo. He reminded his listeners that October is traditionally the month of the Rosary, with the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary falling on October 7. And he said that in light of threats to peace-- particularly in the Middle East-- the faithful should seek supernatural help, in order to counteract the growing fear that "political efforts are of no avail."

The Rosary, the Pontiff continued, builds peace through the power of prayer, while also helping the faithful to maintain hope. "I want to suggest, therefore," he said, "that people, families, and Christian communities pray the Rosary."
