UNICEF/WHO PROMOTE ABORTION FOR ADOLESCENTS

NEW YORK (CWNews.com) - Two United Nations' agencies dealing with children and health have issued a field manual for work with refugees that promotes abortion, said the Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute (C-fam) on Saturday.

The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) and the World Health Organization (WHO) released the controversial manual, titled "Reproductive Health in Refugee Situations: An Interagency Field Manual," that promotes so-called "emergency contraceptives" and abortion for adolescents. Rita Joseph, an Australian delegate to last year's UN population conference, said the manual "is riddled with misrepresentations, euphemisms, and logical inconsistencies."

"The most serious flaws occur in regard to the manual's promotion of spurious new reproductive health rights that include a right to access the deceptively named 'emergency contraception' and a right for children to access reproductive and sexual health services without parental consent," she said. As an example, she cited two passages which claim "repeated use [of emergency contraception] poses no health risks," and then warns of nausea, vomiting, and the risk of ectopic pregnancy, where the embryonic unborn child lodges in the fallopian tube.

The manual also advocates access to abortion by children as young as 10 in spite of cultural or moral norms or parental consent. It states that "patients' access to services should not be contingent on social or cultural backgrounds nor on age ... sexual orientation, or ... parental consent ..."
