POLICE ARREST SUSPECT IN PILGRIMAGE MURDERSALCALDE, New Mexico (CWNews.com) - New Mexican police on
Sunday arrested a suspect in the shooting death of two
teens making a pilgrimage to the shrine of Santuario de
Chimayo. State police arrested Carlos Herrera, 19, at a friend's
home early Easter morning, said spokesman Sgt. Royleen
Ross-Weaver. She said Herrera was an acquaintance of the
two 17-year-old victims, Richard Martinez and Karen
Castanon. The two high-school students were among thousands
of people making the annual pilgrimage to Chimayo, where the
small shrine is said to contain miraculous healing dirt.
Their bodies were found Friday, but few other details were
available. "We received bits and pieces from different people, put it
together and started pursuing the information," Ross-Weaver
said. "We were able to develop the suspect and we also have
physical evidence linking him to the crime." She wouldn't
comment on a motive.
