POPE, BUSH SR. MEET IN ROME, DISCUSS SEPTEMBER 11

VATICAN, (CWNews.com) - Pope John Paul II met with former US President George Bush-- the father of incumbent President George W. Bush-- at the Vatican today.

The Pope told the former American leader that the bishops of the Catholic Church, brought together in Rome for a Synod this month, "share and live with grief the immense tragedy that has struck the American people." The Pope took advantage of a pause in the proceedings of the Synod to meet with the elder Bush. Although the meeting had been scheduled some time ago-- since Bush was planning a visit to Italy-- Vatican officials conceded that the discussions did include the prospects for American responses to the terrorist attack.

Upon returning to the Synod hall, the Holy Father announced that October 11-- one month after the attack on New York and Washington-- would be a day of prayer for the victims of the terrorists and for the cause of world peace. He asked Cardinal Edward Egan to return to New York to lead the observance of a day of prayer there, while the bishops gathered in Rome will pray together in the Synod hall.
