VATICAN OFFICIALLY CONVERTING TO EUROVATICAN, (CWNews.com) - The Vatican has confirmed
that the euro will be its official unit of currency, as of
January 1, 2002. The official announcement adopting the euro was published
in Acta Apostolicae Sedis, the official publication of
Vatican actions, on September 6. The Vatican had already indicated, in December 1998, that
the euro would become the official unit of monetary
exchange inside the city-state. In December 2000, the
Vatican concluded a monetary pact with Italy governing the
introduction of the new currency. The Vatican will now adopt the euro according to the
schedule and conditions set up by the European Union. The
agreement allows for the Vatican to mint coins engraved
with its own designs. To date there has been no
announcement from the Vatican as to whose image would
appear on the coins.
