FUNDAMENTALISTS THREATEN WOMEN OVER THEIR ATTIRE

DAR-ES-SALAAM, Tanzania, (Zenit.org).- Tanzanian fundamentalists of the semiautonomous island of Zanzibar have threatened violent punishment for women who wear miniskirts or indecent dress.

An ultimatum, which expired July 31, obliges women to dress in a "suitable" way. Leaflets being distributed to the public warn of punishment against the "sinners ... in keeping with Islamic law."

Without giving details of the punishments, the leaflets refer to public stoning and lashing.

The police have taken the threats seriously. Patrols are being stepped up to ensure the safety of women against the fundamentalists
