EWTN NEWSFLASH: LITURGICAL DECISIONS FROM U.S. BISHOPS

1. Archbishop Lipscomb of Mobile, Chairman of the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy (BCL), announced today that the Latin editio typica of the Roman Missal (3rd ed.) should be published in approximately two weeks. Part of the Roman Missal is its General Instruction, which has been available in an unofficial English study edition from the BCL since last year. Roman statements have said that this new General Instruction (GIRM) becomes effective when officially promulgated with the Missal. The effect in the United States, however, may not be immediate, as the Bishops Conference is seeking numerous exceptions (Indults), as will be discussed and voted on at this current meeting.

2. The Bishops' Conference approved the Revised Appendix to the new General Instruction for the Dioceses of the United States, which includes adaptations for American use. The Appendix will now be sent to Rome, seeking the recognitio of the Congregation for Divine Worship.

3. The adaptations retain the posture of kneeling from the end of the Sanctus until the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, except when, for good reason, the diocesan bishop determines otherwise.

4. The adaptations permit kneeling at the Ecce Agnus Dei, for the first time codifying an American custom, and also permit either sitting or kneeling after Communion.

5. Holy Communion is to be received standing, with the reverential gesture of a bow of the head. [Rome has determined that, if communicants genuflect before receiving, it may be contrary to norm, but not unlawful.]

6. The use of nontraditional vestments, furnishings, or materials for sacred vessels, is left to the discretion of diocesan bishops.

7. Crosses may be veiled from Saturday of the 4th week in Lent to the end of the Good Friday observance, and not just from Palm Sunday or Holy Thursday.
