SCHOLARLY VOLUME ON INQUISITION DUE SOON

VATICAN, Mar. 21, 01 (CWNews.com) -- The proceedings of an international symposium on the Inquisition, held at the Vatican last October, will soon be published in book form.

Father Georges Cottier, the theologian of the pontifical household and a key organizer of last year's symposium, told the Roman news agency I Media that the proceedings would not be in print before Easter-- as originally scheduled-- because of technical difficulties in the production process. However, the volume will appear soon thereafter.

"This is a book on history, for an audience of historians," Father Cottier cautioned. But it could appeal "also to lay people," he added. The symposium treated the historical and theological issues surrounding the Inquisition from a scholarly perspective, and the contributions of 30 experts will be included.

The symposium, at which Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger presided, capitalized on the opening of Vatican archives from the Inquisition, which were made available for scholarly study in January 1998. At the time the archives were opened, Cardinal Roger Etchegaray observed that the Catholic Church "is not afraid to submit her history to the judgment of historians."
