Pope Meets With President Rafael Correa of Ecuador
Centrality of Social Justice Among Topics Discussed
VATICAN CITY, April 19, 2013 (Zenit.org) - This morning, Pope Francis received Rafael Correa Delgado, president of the Republic of Ecuador, in audience at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. Shortly after, President Correa met with Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.
The talks, which according to a Vatican communique were held in "an atmosphere of cordiality", the head of state and the Holy Father spoke on the contributions of the Catholic Church in the country's social life. Also discussed was the importance of sincere and permanent dialogue between the Church and the State to address fundamental societal challenges."
"The centrality of social justice and the value of solidarity and subsidiarity in seeking the common good were emphasized," the communique stated. "Issues regarding current events in the region, respect for indigenous peoples and their culture, as well as environmental protection" were also discussed.
