Religious freedom is American heritage, Cardinal Wuerl says

Speaking at Georgetown University to a conference on religious liberty, Cardinal Donald Wuerl said that the commitment to religious freedom has been an intrinsic element of American democracy.

Explicitly religious statements were often made by American political leaders during the founding years of the US, the cardinal reminded his audience, and those statements were not considered remarkable because "religion as a presupposition for the political prosperity of our infant republic was simply accepted."

Cardinal Wuerl said that the American founding fathers based their political thinking—and their plans for the American republic—on the foundation of belief in a natural law.
