Singapore's founding prime minister laments low birth rate

Lee Kuan Yew, who served as founding prime minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990, is lamenting his nation's birth rate, which ranks last in the world.

"If we go on like that, this place will fold up, because there'll be no original citizens left to form the majority," said Lee, once an ardent population-control advocate.

"Our educated men and women must decide whether to replace themselves in the next generation," he added. "We've got to persuade people to understand that getting married is important, having children is important."
