How to Use EWTN's Library Search Engine

EWTN's library of over 6,000 Catholic files is available to you through this search engine. The full text is not yet searchable, but you can search by library, file name, date, author or by a key word or phrase that occurs in the title or the description of the file in our database. Searches are not case sensitive.

(Simple Search: Place name of what you are looking for in Keyword field, Hit Search button.)

1. Fill in the Search Fields

Use the Library drop-down list to select the library which you wish to search. Then type any combination of the following: a file name in the Filename field, a date in the AfterDate field, an author name in the Author field, and/or a key word or phrase in the Keyword field. You can use partial file names or partial words, but a partial file name must be the first part of the desired file name, and you may not use wildcard characters of any kind in any of the fields. If you wish to see all the files in a selected library, leave the Filename, AfterDate, Author and Keyword fields blank. (By the way, the Keyword field searches both the title and the description in our database.)

2. Use the AfterDate Field to Find New Files

Use the AfterDate field to find files which have been added to the libraries since a certain date -- that is, to identify new files. The field should be filled in according to the form MM/DD/YY. For example, 01/22/96 would find files added to the libraries after January 22, 1996. (Where appropriate, single digits will work also, such as 1/22/96.) Note that the earliest file date is 4/1/96, since that is when these web libraries were created from an earlier set of digital files.

3. Filter Out Duplicate Files

For every text (.TXT) file in our libraries, there is a corresponding compressed (.ZIP) file. (Compressed files save time in downloading, but must be decompressed on arrival.) Both versions are displayed exactly the same way except for the file extension. To prevent such double listings, use the Version buttons to select the type you prefer to work with -- either .TXT (the default) or .ZIP. To see both, select the Both button.

4. Search and Select for Downloading

Click the Search button when ready, and after a few moments the search engine will send a list of matching files and their descriptions to your browser. Each file in the list will contain both an HTTP (web) link and an anonymous ftp link which you can click on to retrieve the file(s) of your choice.

Begin Search

Our search engine breaks file lists into pages (50 files per page) so that an unlimited number of hits may be viewed without causing the browser's local cache to overflow; it uses a revised search form which fits on a single screen in most browsers even at relatively low resolutions; it allows you to search for files added after a specified date. Please send suggestions and report errors by sending email to the Viewer.
