Church Architecture & Relation to Musical Modes
Question from on 12-18-2003:
Thanks for all you do to provide vital information. I was reading something recently which indicated that some churches, in particular cathedrals such as Chartres and Notre Dame, were designed with the musical modes in mind. It was stated that the architural dimensions were in direct relation to the movement of the musical modes. The book I was reading (one of Thomas Merton's) mentioned it only in passing and I was wondering if you might know anything about it or could point me to some good resources. I would like to research this topic more in depth, but I don't know where to look next. Any suggestions? Again, thanks. Vivat Jesus! (And so should the unborn!) Deacon Bob
Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 12-22-2003:
That's an intriguing idea. The modes would have been, I am presuming, the Gregorian chant modes used in Mass and Office. Hopefully, someone will respond with information on this. I have none myself, unfortunately.
