EWTN Catholic Q&A
molar pregnancy
Question from anonymous on 04-21-2013:

If a molar pregnancy is caused by the fertilization of an egg with no nucleus, did it *ever* have a soul? (Recall that one argument for an embryo's personhood is the presence of a complete and unique set of DNA, which would be lacking in such a case.)

My understanding of molar pregnancy is that the abnormal tissue that is created and appears to be a pregnancy is not and instead is a type of problematic growth. Doctors recommend its removal but at no point is it defined as a human being.

Why? The egg contains no genetic material ... it is empty.
