| RCIA godparents and sponsors Question from Karen on 02-26-2013: |
Can an RCIA catechumen or candidate have a spouse or fiance be godparent or sponsor for reception into the Church? |

Karen-- The Church does not forbid it, but it can be a very bad idea. A godparent or sponsor is supposed to be someone who will be a spiritual mentor and a moral example to the person entering the Church. A spouse, either current or future, oftentimes is in no position to act objectively in this regard due to the intimacy of the relationship. Michelle Arnold www.ewtn.com |
