| Fast and abstinence in jail Question from George on 01-29-2013: |
During Lent abstinence from meat on Fridays is obligatory in the United States as elsewhere, and it is sinful not to observe this discipline without a serious reason (physical labor, pregnancy, sickness, etc.). Is being in prison or jail reason to not abstain from meat on Fridays of Lent? |

George-- It depends on the situation of the individual prisoner, who should consult with his chaplain for guidance. Certainly, it would be a fine thing for someone in prison to join in the communal penance of the Church if he is at all capable of doing so. Michelle Arnold www.ewtn.com |
