Fast and abstinence in jail
Question from George on 01-29-2013:

During Lent abstinence from meat on Fridays is obligatory in the United States as elsewhere, and it is sinful not to observe this discipline without a serious reason (physical labor, pregnancy, sickness, etc.). Is being in prison or jail reason to not abstain from meat on Fridays of Lent?

It depends on the situation of the individual prisoner, who should consult with his chaplain for guidance. Certainly, it would be a fine thing for someone in prison to join in the communal penance of the Church if he is at all capable of doing so.
