EWTN Catholic Q&A
Latin phrases said during mass
Question from Fran L on 11-02-2012:

This may not be the right forum, the others were full. My question is there is a short phrase sung right before communion " agnus dei" hopefully i spelled itright or close, could you explain what that song means? Thank You

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 11-06-2012:

Angus Dei are two words meaning Lamb of God. This threefold invocation is based upon the title of Jesus and the words of Saint John the Baptist, who said of our Lord, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." The threefold repetition is done for emphasis and because God is a Trinity of three Persons. When one Person of God acts, all three Persons act, each in his own relational role.

Thanks, Fran

Father Echert
