Down Syndrome and religious life
Question from Mike on 3/28/2014:

Can a person with Down Syndrome enter religious life?

Answer by Catholic Answers on 3/28/2014:

Mike--

It depends on the individual health concerns of the person, and on the work and needs of the community. If the person is able to assist that religious community in its work and spiritual life, there seems to be no reason that Down Syndrome would be an inherent impediment to religious life. Of course, if the person has health conditions that either prevent him from joining into communal life or are too demanding (financially and otherwise) for the community to care for, then the community may turn away a candidate for those reasons.
