RCIA sponsorship
Question from Peter on 3/23/2014:

I have been asked by an RCIA candidate to be his sponsor. After attending two classes with him, I've noticed he isn't participating. When I asked him later what the Eucharist was, he couldn't answer. Do I have a responsibility to discuss this with the instructor? What are my duties as a sponsor?

Answer by Catholic Answers on 3/24/2014:

Peter--

I think you have the right to gently question him about whether or not he is still interested in becoming Catholic, but only if you can do so in a way that does not imply that you are monitoring his participation. I also cannot recommend doing anything that could be construed as "reporting him" to the instructor.
