Question from Obaro Okpakpor on 12/28/2012:

What does the chuech say about paying tithe?

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 1/15/2013:

There is no precise stipulated in the New Testament, that is, now in the final covenant of the Church. In the Old Covenant, one tenth of ones possessions was required--the origin of the word tithe--but as noted in Act of the Apostles and elsewhere, in the New Testament we depend upon the generosity of the individual, motivated by grace.

Remember, also, folks that your parish is NOT a charity, but your spiritual family. So we have an obligation to financially support our parish community, in accord with what we can afford and what our conscience and circumstances dictate.

Thanks, Obaro

Father Echert
