Question from barrylindsay31466@yahoo.com on 12/13/2012:

Did Mary actually die before her Assumption?

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 12/28/2012:

The Western tradition is that she was preserved from death and taken bodily into Heaven some years after the Ascension of her Son. The Eastern tradition speaks of the dormitian (sleep) of Mary, believing that she died, though did not suffer any ravages of death, and shortly after was taken bodily into Heaven. The Church does not formally teach on this detail, one way or the other, but it is a dogma that Mary was Assumed body and soul into Heaven and is there now.

Merry Christmas
