I realy think that what the Old Testamnet was refering to was false gods and images. All through out the Old Testament there are carved images some in Heaven and some of that are on Earth. Examples would be the gold cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant, the serpent on Aarons staff, the cherubim in Solomons Temple. The other thing I feel the old testament meant was not to worship these images. Again an example would be that although there were cherubim on the Ark, no one worshipped them. They were symbolic of Gods creatures and their role. What Protestents have a hard time understanding is that the first Christians who later became called Catholic in the first century past on their tradition to future generations of Christians. Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle. 2 Thes 2:15. To me that pasage alone does away with the whole sola scriptura notion most Protestants often refer too.
