Is there anything in scripture that mentions the "sacred heart"? And does the sacred heart of Jesus mean His physical heart, His feelings or the essence of His being? |

There are several texts that cite the heart as revealing the "heart" of a person, that is, the root of good or evil. The heart is the core of the person, if you will. The Church draws from the Passion according to Saint John for the Gospel reading on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, specifically the account of our Lord on the Cross entrusting his Mother into the care of the Disciple Whom He Loved. His physical heart was pierced while on the Cross, so it includes the physical heart of our Lord but refers more deeply to the sacred love of God for us, which was the divine motive for creating us and then redeeming us, at the cost of the death of the Son of God.
