Rennet and Lent
Question from Anthony on 2/17/2012:

Most cheeses contain a substance called rennet which is a variety of enzymes taken from the stomach of an animal (such as a calf) to help the milk curdle into cheese. Therefore, would cheese be prohibited on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays in Lent because it contains something taken from an animal?

Answer by Catholic Answers on 2/17/2012:

Anthony--

No, cheese is permitted, at least in the Latin church. Eastern churches often have much stricter fasting and abstinence disciplines, so an Eastern Catholic would have to ask his Eastern Catholic pastor for guidance.
