RE: Annulment for Presbyterian/Jew?
Question from Jim on 11/1/2011:

Why would an annulment be needed by the woman since from what the poster stated it was not a sacramental marriage but a civil ceremony?

Answer by Robert J. Flummerfelt, J.C.L. on 11/2/2011:

Hi Jim,

Even if a marriage is not sacramental, we would still presume it to be valid. If two people of the Jewish faith marry and this is the first marriage for each, our Church teaches us that this is a valid union, albeit not a sacramental marriage because of the fact that both parties are unbaptized. When two baptized persons marry for the first time (for each) according to canonical form if Catholic or according to the civil law if both are Protestant, such a marriage is a sacrament in virtue of the parties both being validly baptized.

Blessings, Bob
