Temporal Punishment
Question from mt on 4/27/2009:

We receive forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance for Mortal sins. We don't have to go to Confession for Venial Sins which are forgiven in the participation of Holy Mass and receiving the Echarist. Is temporal punishment attached to Mortal Sin only? How do we obtain complete or partial remission of our temporal punishment?

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 5/24/2009:

Dear Mt,

Temporal punishment is to to any sin. You wack a person over the head and he lands you in the hospital. Sins earn their own payback. Various types of indulgences bring about either partial or total remission of punishment.

Dr. Geraghty
