Infant Baptism During Lent
Question from Lori Ann Scott on 2/26/2005:

Dear Canon Law Staff,

The parish that my parents recently joined does not make it a practice to Baptize infants during Lent. Is this proper?

Thank you so much for this service! In Christ, Lori Ann

Answer by Robert J. Flummerfelt, J.C.L. on 2/26/2005:

It is strange to do this, given the fact that parents have the duty to baptize their infant within weeks of the child's birth. Seems to go against the letter and spirit of the law and the RIGHT of parents to have their children baptized within the first weeks of the child's birth.

I would say that such a prohibition runs afoul of the parents' right to have their child baptized soon after birth.

Peace, Bob
