single life as vocation
Question from C.J. on 7/25/2003:

Is the single life considered a vocation in the Church? Is it the same as religious or married life? Are there any references I can go to on this topic ? I am in need of Church documents or teaching on this state in life as a vocation.

Answer by Fr. Robert J. Levis on 7/27/2003:

Dear C.J., Yes, if God wants a person not to marry but to remain chaste and celibate in a lay life, then yes, that is his call to such a one, his Will for that person. Yes, it may be called a vocation. The only available modern literature I have come across is found in the allocutions, encyclicals, and talks given by Pope John Paul 2. Fr. Bob Levis
