Augustinian vs. Thomist philosophy
Question from Catherine St. Clair on 10/30/2000:

What is the difference between the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas and that of St. Augustine? I frequently hear philosophers called Thomists or Augustinians but no-one seems to know what the distinction is.

Answer by Richard Geraghty on 11/5/2000:

Dear Catherine,

When the two saints approached a philosophical topic like the nature of man, St. Thomas looked to Aristotle for his inspiration while St.Augustine looked to the Neo-Platonists for his inspiration. Thus we have different philosophical approaches.

Dr. Geraghty
