Question from Joshen East on 10/20/2012:

Why do Catholics pray "through" Christ's name instead of praying "in" Christ's name? John14:14 makes it very clear, but Catholics still insist. Why???

Answer by Fr. John Echert on 10/30/2012:

The name stands for the person, in this case, the Name of Jesus stands for our Lord. Since Christ is Mediator to the Father, THROUGH Whom we have access to the Father, the use of through is appropriate. But really, both prepositions can work and I do not believe that there is any theological difference at issue. If so, follow up with a post and let me know the issue you see in this.

Thanks, Joshen

Father Echert
