Question from archie on 8/30/2009:

how come when someone is divorced they can not receive Holy Communion . But someone on death row for murder even on the day they are going to be executed they have the right to receive Holy Communion. This I can not understand. archie

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 9/27/2009:

A person who is divorced but not invalidly remarried is permitted to receive the sacraments.

If a person divorces and marries another person and is unwilling to do anything about the situation, the person is guilty of unrepentant adultery. That is why the person is not permitted to receive the sacraments.

If for example a murderer is on death row and is sorry for the murder and resolves not to do it again, then the person can be forgiven and receive Holy Communion.

The question is not about which sin is involved but whether a person is sorry or not.
