SSPX Mass
Question from William McCarthy on 8/30/2009:

A close relative was recently in a situation where an SSPX Mass was he only one available. She did not attend Mass, fearing that attending this Mass would be a mortal sin. If this situation should arise again, is the SSPX Mass an alternative?

Answer by Robert J. Flummerfelt, J.C.L. on 9/18/2009:

Hi William,

If for whatever reason it is physically impossible to attend a Mass or Divine Liturgy of a Catholic Church, be it either of the Latin Church sui iuris or any of the Eastern Catholic Churches sui iuris, if a Catholic cannot, due to physical impossible attend any of these liturgies on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation, then one is relieved of the obligation to worship at Mass or Divine Liturgy at ANY Catholic Church sui iuris on that day of obligation. If that is the case, then, to receive spiritual nourishment and to worship the Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation as best one can UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES, then yes, one may worship at an SSPX Church just like if UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES the same person worshipped in an Eastern Orthodox Church.

I hope this is clear.

Peace and blessings, Bob
