adoption
Question from Anonymous on 9/16/2009:

Is it possible for priests to adopt children? If so, how would that work and the reasons behind it.

Answer by Robert J. Flummerfelt, J.C.L. on 9/18/2009:

Hi Anonymous,

I know for a fact that priests have in the past adopted children. However, now, under the current situation and sad circumstances which became well-known this decade, I cannot imagine any bishop in the US ever again permitting a Catholic priest to adopt. The exception would be a Catholic priest who is married, be he either an Eastern Catholic priest with his own natural children or an indulted Latin Catholic priest, who once was an Anglican priest, who became Catholic, who also is married and has children. Other than these limited circumstances, I cannot imagine this being permitted by a bishop.

Blessings, Bob
