missed Mass due to travel
Question from anonymous on 10/31/2011:

I cannot agree with your answer to the wife of the gentleman who missed Sunday Mass when he arrived home about an hour before the last Mass of the day due to travel. Mortal sin is GRAVE. Abortion, adultery, fornication and murder are mortal sins. I do not believe missing Sunday Mass is a mortal sin. It is not a commandment. The closest thing there was to Mass was the last supper. Jesus did not require anyone to attend Sunday Mass.

Answer by Robert J. Flummerfelt, J.C.L. on 11/1/2011:

Hi,

I apologize if I sound judgmental, but my answer is not my opinion, it is firmly rooted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Specifically, paragraph 2181 is crystal clear. The Catholic Church defines missing Mass under the circumstances as described as constituting grave sin, I only echoed the Church's clear teaching on this point. The reasons given did not constitute a valid reason to miss Sunday Mass; hence my answer as supported by the Catechism. I respectfully request you to reconsider your position in light of what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches and articulates.

"The Sunday obligation

2180 The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass."117 "The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day."118

2181 The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor.119 Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin."
