Statues in the Sanctuary
Question from TB on 9/19/2009:

What does Canon Law allow as far as Statues in the Sanctuary. We have only one statue in ours and it's of a Saint. The Tabernacle and all other statues of Jesus, Mary are located in the Church but none of them in the Sanctuary. Thanks, Tom

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 9/27/2009:

The liturgical norms define the decoration of sacred space.

There are not a lot of specific laws regarding the statues. It is often determined by the local diocese or individual parish.

The main "rule" that comes from the liturgical norm is that one does not duplicate symbols. Thus, there should not be more than one image of any one particular saint.
