Marriage question
Question from Annie on 9/19/2009:

Catholic man married non-baptized woman in civil ceremony 3 years ago. First marriage for both. Wife is now going through RCIA.

Wife would like to wait until she has received her Sacraments before convalidating the marriage. The RCIA director is pushing to convalidate as soon as possible, saying that the marriage must be convalidated BEFORE she can receive her Sacraments.

Other than allowing the husband to return to the Sacraments sooner rather than later, is there a pressing reason to convalidate now?

Thank you!

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 9/27/2009:

I agree with the RCIA director. The validation should happen as soon as possible.

Right now, the couple is living in an invalid marriage and both parties are prevented from receiving the sacraments. This is not only a problem of danger to the soul of the Catholic, who may not receive the sacraments, but also for the catechumen. She should be striving to live a life of holiness. She should not be living in an invalid marriage in an objectively grave state.

I doubly applaud your RCIA director because, unfortunately, not all RCIA directors are handling issues related to marriage situations correctly.
