Mass Changes
Question from John on 9/9/2009:

Greetings Colin,

I have looked at the Catholic Bishops website(www.usccb.org) which has an area dedicated to the future changes in the missal.(I recommend this for anyone wishing to read more about this). Are these changes for the United States only or for all english speaking Latin rite countries? And what is your opinion of these changes? Thank you for your answer and God bless always.

John

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 9/10/2009:

One of the goals set by the Hoyl see was consurrence between missals in the same labguage from different coutnries. I do not know to what extent that will be the case, but I suepct susbtantially it wil be.

From what I have read the changes are positive, restoring to English the dogmatic and linguistic richness of the Latin text. Some believe that texts should be proportioned to the capacity of the audience. Imagine, however, Shakespeare for the masses, removing the Elizabethan English and replacing it with modern speech! Plus, we are not dealing with ordinary texts, but with texts which preserve both a sacred way of speaking to and about God, as well as doctrinal precision about what the Church believes.
