Question from anon on 9/10/2009:

Colin,

Probably everyone who listens to EWTN knows English, but not Latin. I like listening to Mass when it is on and I am driving. However, sooner or later during the EWTN Mass I punch the button and go to another station. The reason, the use of Latin. I was an altar boy when the Mass was in Latin and don't remeber what the words mean.

Watching an EWTN Mass is even harder to take. It appears that you are trying to show that you are more Catholic than others.

Outside of the Mass I think EWTN is a great network. Sorry that this is an opinion and not a question.

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 9/10/2009:

Opinion noted. However, as I told another questioner, the reasons are the norms of the Church which enourage its use, the international character of our Mass, and I might have added that the friars have as part of their constitution to celebrate the Mass with solemnity. Latin and chant adds solemnity.

Ultimately, viewers and listeners tune into the friars daily Mass and that of those who participate sacramentally in the chapel here. They are the congregation. If airing that Mass benefits a virtual congregation of the sick and shutins, that is a blessing. But, hopefuly everyone who is able is going to their parish, too! Our Mass is NOT a substitute for actual sacramental participation.
