Mass Changes
Question from Anne on 6/15/2009:

Hello. I am anxious to know when we will see the new Mass changes that were mandated by the Holy Father last year? Why do these things take so long?

Some priests I know are already changing the words of Consecration back to "for you and for many" instead of "all," since they know it was aleady approved and mandated by the pope. Do the US bishops feel that they have the right to delay the use of the new translation?

Thanks,

Anne

Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 9/9/2009:

The majority of the US bishops favor the changes, have voted for them, and they will take place!

However, it is no less an abuse to implement changes we like before the Church has authorized their use, as it is to introduce changes NOT approved by the Church. The same papal authority that approves the changes we like is the one which established the process by which the changes were drafted, approved and will be implemented.

That process is not complete! Parts of the Missal are still in work, and when those are approved by Rome the USCCB will have it published and set a date for universal implementation, possibly as soon as the First Sunday of Advent 2010. This way there is an orderly transition, prepared for by a proper catechesis and not implemented by the self-will of any one person, but with the concurrence of both the Holy See and the bishops.
